We have one objective, which is to provide travelers the freedom necessary to explore everything a country has to offer by providing them access to affordable camper vans and other vehicles. We achieve this high standard because we work closely with major subcontractors; oftentimes, these subcontractors also work for the well-known car rental companies. Normally, each of our separate subcontractors has their own unique policies and it can be a headache for customers. Unlike other companies, because we work closely with our subcontractors we are able to provide some standardize of the rental process and make it easier for our customers to rent a vehicle and enjoy their vacation. Another big advantage of renting a vehicle through Maki Car Rentals is our price. At the big rental companies, customers pay a premium mostly because of costly marketing programs; however, at Maki Car Rentals we provide you with the same car – but without the flashy gimmicks so the savings are passed on to you.
Who are the people behind Maki Car Rental?
Maki Car Rental is a brand of Indian Ocean Travel. We have been in the car rental market and travel industry for many years and started out in the Mauritian car rental market. The company’s headquarters are located in Mauritius but we have expanded around the world and have offices in the United Kingdom, Germany, Romania, Mauritius and New Zealand. All our employers speak English and German fluently.
Is it safe to book a car online with Maki Car Rental?
We can honestly say that booking a car with us is 100% safe and your money is guaranteed. Here is why:
a) If any of our suppliers run into financial difficulty, your money is still safe. At Maki Car Rentals your funds are not processed until you return your vehicle. Recently, AVIS Mauritius, which was one of our subcontractors, fell into severe financial trouble, but none our customers who booked with AVIS cars through our website had anything to worry about.
b) Your money is safe with us, because we as a broker are specialized in handling large amounts of money. We have a custom built cash flow management system which can show us at any given time how much money we owe our customers and suppliers.
c) Paying your invoices online is reliable and secure with our system. We don’t have access to any of your financial information. If you pay with a credit card or through PayPal, the payment is made directly with the servers of our bank. Anybody who says they are hacker proof, lies or does not know better. But if there is nothing to gain for a hacker, we can all sleep better.

At the end of this period, you will get an email from them with the option to add another 30 days. If you make a booking more than 60 days in advance, we apologize, because this insurance timeline is limited.
The online booking process
How do I make a booking at Maki Car Rental?
The booking process takes only about 5 minutes. First, you must select the booking period, the pickup and the return location and then click on the "show offers" button. You will receive a list of our cars already calculated with the total price, which will include the pickup and return fees. The cars are grouped by availability status (green = available, yellow = partially available, red = not available). You can then choose any of the available cars by clicking on the "Book now" button, which is directly below the price of each car. On the following page you can supply further details like payment and insurance options and, of course, your name and address. The next step will confirm all your data and by clicking on the "send booking" button you will finish the booking process. It is that simple! Immediately after booking your vehicle, you will receive a confirmation of receipt via email. One of our local partners will be informed about your booking, too. As soon as we get the green light, we will send you a booking confirmation and invoice via email.
How can I pay?
Thanks to technology, we can receive payment through a number of different methods. Currently you can pay via bank transfer, credit card (Visa & MasterCard) and PayPal (all major credit cards).
Please note; bank transfers are not available for last minute bookings (less the 3 days before pickup).
For rental cars, it is also possible to pay the rental fee in cash upon delivery. In this case you would need to book our travel cancelation expenses insurance. The fees for this insurance must be paid within 2 days after receiving the invoice.

Will I receive the exact vehicle that I chose?
We try to deliver the exact vehicle model that you booked; however, there are rare cases when this is not possible because of accidents, repairs or simply bad planning. The good news is you will always receive a vehicle of equivalent or higher value than the one you have chosen. In general, the value of a car is determined by the ACRISS codes.
Is there a minimum booking duration?
Yes, currently we only offer bookings of 3 days or longer. For economic reasons we have to put a surcharge on bookings that are less than 5 days. If you plan a 4-day-booking, the surcharge is 15% of a day-rate and for a 3-day-booking there is a surcharge of 30% of a day-rate. Our prices are still competitive and the surcharge is already included in the totals shown on the website.
How do I add extra features?
You can add extra features like child seats or satellite navigation (GPS) during the booking process, when you also supply your name and address. Upon demand we can also supply you with a driver.

In Romania, you can book a baby seat (3€ per day), sat-nav (5€ per day), snow chains (3€ per day) and a roof rack for your skis (6€ per day). An driver would be 20€ per day (8 hours).
What are the cancelation terms?
For rental cars: If you need to cancel your booking, you can do it free of charge 48 hours before the rental period without any restrictions. If you cancel your booking after that period or give the car back before the end of the booking period, we will charge 30% of the remaining rental fee or 49€, whichever is greater.
For camper rentals: there is no cancelation fee 26 days prior to vehicle pick up. If the booking is cancelled between 8 to 25 days prior to pick up date you will be charged 20% of the invoice total. From 1 to 7 days prior vehicle pick up the cancellation fee will be 50% of the invoice total. The total fee of the invoice will be charged if the booking is cancelled on the day of pick up. No refund is applicable if the vehicle is brought back early.

Crashes and breakdowns
What happens if I am involved in a car accident?
In case of an accident, please inform the hotline mentioned on your booking confirmation as soon as possible. A friendly employee at Maki Car Rental is available 24 hours a day. He or she can organize a replacement car for you and help with other issues like filing a police report, which is mandatory for insurance reasons.
If the police determine that it was 100 % the fault of the opposing party, you will not have to pay for the damage. If the accident was your fault and the damage exceeds or equals your deposit, we will still only retain the maximum amount.

What happens in case of breakdown?
Even though we only broker well maintained cars, we cannot eliminate the possibility of a breakdown. We can understand your frustration if this happens during your holidays. Therefore we will try to get you a replacement car or roadside assistance as soon as possible. On your booking confirmation you will find the telephone number of our 24-hour hotline, where our friendly employees are waiting to help you out in any situation.
Traffic rules
Which special traffic rules apply?
In Romania, they drive on the right side of the road as in most parts of Europe. The speed limit for the highways is 130km/h, for motorways it is 100 km/h. In cities and towns you shouldn't drive faster than 50 km/h. On all other roads the limit is 90 km/h if not signed differently.
Do I need an international drivers licence?
Tourists are allowed to use their existing drivers licence in Romania (non-EU citizens can only drive a vehicle for a maximum of 90 days). It must be possible to read your licence without special language skills. When in doubt, an EU or international drivers licence is recommended.
Insurance and liability policy
Which insurances are included?
All cars under Maki Car Rental have full comprehensive insurance coverage, which includes theft protection. The maximum liability sum depends on the respective country (see below). The insurance covers all cases except accidents caused from driving under the influence, violation of the rental terms or culpable negligence. Damages on the bottom of the vehicle, loss or damage of the car keys as well as personal belongings are not covered. Further country specific exceptions can be found below:

Is there a deductible in the event of damage or loss?
By default you have to pay a certain deductible (depending on country and type of car) in the event of damages or losses. You have the option to waive the deductible by paying an additional fee per day. You will be able to see the exact fees and to choose one of the options after you have selected one particular car during the booking process.

In Romania, the deductibles can range from 150€ to 500€, depending on the booking. In order to waive the deductible, you can and additional 3€ to 10€ per day.
Do I have to pay a deposit?
If you chose the insurance with a deductible, you will have to pay a deposit. The amount of the deposit depends on car type and country (see the section about the deductible). You can pay in cash or by credit card. In case of payment with a credit card, the owner of the card should be present when the car is delivered. If the car is brought back in the same condition as when you picked it up, you will receive the full amount back after dropping it off.
What is covered by your cancelation expenses insurance?
This insurance covers all cancelation costs, which may occur, including returning the vehicle early. You can cancel the car up until the last minute, no questions asked. The price of this insurance can be seen during the booking process.

How are the prices calculated?
The prices quoted on Maki Car Rental are seasonal. Furthermore we automatically apply discounts depending on the rental duration. The exact pricing table depends on the car type; to learn all of our pricing details follow these instructions: Navigate to the "Cars and Prices" page and hold the curser over the little "i” sign in the upper right corner of each result box. Our booking system will calculate the total price automatically once you provide your rental period details.
Please note that all our invoices are calculated in Euros. Any prices shown on the website in other currencies are for your convenience only. Where can I pick up my vehicle?
For rental cars, there are two different possibilities: you can either pick it up at the airport or it can be delivered to a place of your choice. Just tell us the time and the pick-up/drop-off locations and a driver will wait for you there. For some areas the delivery is already included in the price and unfortunately for more remote areas we have to charge a little extra. The delivery price is already included in the quotes you see on our website.
For campers we offer a free pick-up and drop-off service. According to your desired pick-up time one of our staff members will pick you up at a chosen point (airport, hotel, ferry terminal) and bring you to the rental office.

Can I supply different places for the pick-up and the return of the vehicle?
Yes, in general we do accept one-way rentals. Fees will depend on the country where you rent the car. In case there is a fee for your one-way rental, our system will automatically include it in all quoted prices.
Payment terms
Do I need a credit card?
No, you can also pay with a bank transfer or through PayPal. Please note, that if you do not own a credit card you might be obligated to pay a deposit in cash. More about deposit
How do I pay via PayPal?
After you send your booking, you will receive a confirmation email. Included in the email is a section with the PayPal logo on the right side. On the left side you find a link, which will take you directly to PayPal, with the payment data already set. The transaction will proceed after you have entered your login information. If you do not already have a PayPal account, you can either signup (It's free!) or try PayPal as a guest.
Can I pay the car upon delivery?
The prices mentioned on our site are prepaid prices, so the payment needs to be made upfront. However, for rental cars there is one exception: If you choose to book our travel cancelation expenses insurance, you can choose to pay for your car upon delivery in cash. The fees for this insurance have to be paid in advance, though. You can choose one of the usual payment methods for that.
